Grayskul is a hip hop duo who’ve been a presence in the underground scene since 2005. They come from Oldominion, a mega-collaborative rap crew from the Pacific Northwest who birthed the region’s now iconic rap scene. The duo thrives off vocal interplay. The dichotomy of flow, attitude, and appearance make for a colorful sound that continues to evolve over the years.
JFK is known as the ‘Recluse,’ sometimes spending months penning a single verse. His flow is quick, jagged, and nasally: a perfect complement to Onry Ozzborn’s calculation. Onry exists to give ‘Reason’ to Grayskul. His steady, chewy flow gives consistency and foundation to the grimy, somber beats. His unwavering verses pour out quickly or not at all as he sometimes records multiple vocal tracks in a single session.
To date Grayskul has released ten records, the most recent being “Zenith.” Zenith is new territory for the group, incorporating strange moody textures, off-color beats, and throwback production. Snafu, Aesop Rock, and Raekwon contribute guest vocals while relatively unknown producers Smoke and Void Pedal add their take on the stalwart’s lyrical workouts.
